The Portfolio Committee on Transport has extended the deadline for submissions on the Administration and Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) Bill to August 31.

The AARTO Amendment Bill proposes that delivery of notices include electronic methods, that national roll-out of the programme takes place in the next financial year and that it provides for the apportionment of penalties.

It also highlights and proposes the need for an infringement tribunal to deal with offences, as well as the rehabilitation of road traffic offenders.

Committee chairperson Dikeledi Magadzi says it is important that people are afforded more of an opportunity to submit their input to the committee, as the AARTO Bill will have an impact on their lives.

“The committee should avoid a situation where people are not given adequate opportunity to comment on the proposed legislation. Parliament is an institution of the people and people should be allowed to influence legislation making,” she states.
