Collaborative project aims to boost local manufacturing
Powertech Transformers (PTT) would be among the first companies to benefit from a collaborative research and development (R&D) project aimed at increasing the competitiveness and capability of local companies.
PTT, which is a subsidiary of Powertech and the JSE-listed Altron Group, would partner with the University of Pretoria’s (UP’s) Department of Mechanical Engineering, which received funding for the initiative from the Department of Science and Technology’s (DSTs) Technology Localisation Programme.
The Technology Localisation Implementation Unit (TLIU) – hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – had been established to implement the DST’s programme.
The objective of the initiative was to provide increased access to new technologies, skills and innovations to qualifying South African companies through technology assistance packages.
These companies would then be able to increase the level of local components and services provided to South Africa’s State-owned companies.
This would boost local manufacturing capabilities and activities, thereby reducing reliance on imports and increasing skills development and sustainable work opportunities.
PTT’s first major R&D project with the assistance of the TLIU is related to the short-circuit ability of a transformer and would enable PTT to further study its empirical factors and engineering models.
PTT CEO said that, for the company to progress, it needed greater focus on innovation and R&D.
“The collaborative R&D opportunities through the CSIR, DST and UP provide us with a sound platform to excel and, at the same time, boost local transformer engineering design and manufacturing capabilities,” he said in a statement.
