Codelco plans to reduce fresh water consumption by 60% by reusing water from tailings deposits, getting sea water from the desalination plant and improving the efficiency of its operating processes.

The project involves the construction of a desalination plant, with an initial capacity of 840 ℓ/s, for Codelco’s Chuquicamata, Radomiro Tomic and Ministro Hales mines.

The project has the potential to expand to 1 956 ℓ/s.

Latest Developments
Codelco has reported that it will begin construction on the long-delayed desalination plant this year to supply its biggest operations in northern Chile.

Construction was delayed in December 2019 after the company cancelled the contract it had awarded to Marubeni Corporation and Transelec, owing to technical adjustments to be made to the project.

The consortium will be in charge of developing the works for the plant and its impulsion systems.

The consortium will build and operate the plant, before transferring it to Codelco.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Marubeni, Transelec and Techint (desalination plant construction).
