PERTH (miningweekly.com) - ASX-listed Coal of Africa (CoAL) has been forced to cease operations at its Vele Colliery, in South Africa’s Limpopo province, following heavy rains.

The miner said on Tuesday that the mine site had recorded 500 mm rainfall over the past five days, which has caused some flooding.

Normal operations were expected to resume within seven days, subject to receding rainfall.

The operation currently has some 5 500 t of stockpiled thermal coal product, and produces some 7 000 t of saleable coal a week.

Meanwhile, CoAL’s lodge and management facility has been converted into a crisis communications hub and safe haven for people stranded in the area. Emergency services have set up a base at the facility, where more than 150 flood victims were expected to seek shelter.
