While South Africa’s Electricity Minister was mooting what would be an extremely costly and disruptive plan to extend the life of South Africa’s failing coal stations, the world’s richest countries were agonising over the fine print of a text relating to the phase out of coal ahead of the G7 summit, scheduled for Hiroshima, Japan next month. Ahead of the summit there were fears that any backsliding on timelines will create space for yet more decarbonisation delays. Photograph: Bloomberg
