City Power Johannesburg on Friday denied any irregularities during the procurement processes surrounding the awarding of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Smart Metering contract.

“We are confident that a proper process was followed and we refute the suggested insinuation of irregularities,” City Power public relations GM Sol Masolo said in a statement.

Recent media reports questioned the awarding of the contract to the Edison Corporation, whose owner was claimed to have links to the ruling African National Congress.

The tender was for the roll-out of new electricity meters to be installed in every business and household in the city.

Despite its refutations, the power provider had, in consultation with its shareholder, the City of Johannesburg, appointed advocate Vuyani Ngalwana to independently review the internal processes relating to the procurement.

“City Power has zero tolerance for corruption and is fully committed to eradicating any form of corruption to ensure we provide an effective and efficient service to the community we serve,” Masolo added.
