Project Description
The project involves the construction and rehabilitation of a rail line that will transport 18-million tons of coal from Mozambique to Malawi.

A new 138.5 km line from Chikhwawa, in southern Malawi, to meet an existing line in the country’s Balaka province will be built. The existing link between Nkaya and Nayuchi (98.6 km) will also be rehabilitated.

The new railway line will have yearly haulage of at least five-million tons of general Malawian cargo.

Distances will be cut in transporting Mozambican coal by taking cargo through neighbouring Malawi.

$1-billion.

Duration
Construction and rehabilitation of the railway line is expected to be completed in three years.

Latest Developments
The Malawian government has signed the $1-billion deal with Vale for the construction and rehabilitation of the railway line.
