The Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) has signed its first international agreement to collaborate with the University of Canterbury in New Zealand on green hydrogen.

CHIETA chief executive Yershen Pillay and Saurabh Sinha, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Canterbury, signed the agreement at Kempton Park in Gauteng on Tuesday.

As part of the Memorandum of Agreement, CHIETA and the University have agreed to establish a future Study Abroad program for South African students at their campus in Christchurch.

“This is our first agreement internationally, and we are delighted to open doors to South African students having study opportunities at the University of Canterbury,” said Mr Pillay.

He said the enormous opportunities in the green hydrogen field would create job opportunities and help grow the economy by providing the requisite skills.

“We are incredibly grateful to Prof Sinha for enabling us to partner with one of the world’s leading universities,” he added.

Formerly the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University Johannesburg, Prof Sinha said he was thrilled to collaborate with CHIETA to help unlock opportunities for South African students in a rapidly growing sector.

Students will gain first-hand experience with start-ups in the hydrogen sector in New Zealand.

“We are looking forward to a mutually beneficial collaboration and ensuring that South African students have access to world-class learning and tuition facilities that will enable them to return home soundly equipped to contribute to the burgeoning green hydrogen sector,” Prof Sinha said.

CHIETA will issue an open call for students to apply for a three-month study opportunity at the University of Canterbury, founded in 1873 and renowned for civil and structural engineering departments.
