Zero Carbon Charge (Charge) says it is on schedule to complete construction work on its two newest off-grid electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by June.

The company believes the two additions – Charge N3 Roadside and Charge N3 Tugela – should enable increased electric vehicle activity on this busy freight and passenger vehicle corridor between Johannesburg and Durban.

The stations will operate off-grid, as they are powered solely by solar energy and battery storage.

Construction is made possible by a R100-million investment in Charge by the Development Bank of Southern Africa, with the N3 rollout a prerequisite for the transaction.

“With the N3 now unlocking for electric travel, the next priority is the N1, extending reliable, off-grid, ultra-fast charging along the country’s most critical long-distance routes,” says Charge cofounder Joubert Roux.

He adds that Charge’s stations are also electric truck-ready.

The company in January demonstrated the simultaneous charging of two electric trucks provided by Sany Trucks, alongside four passenger EVs at its first charging station in Wolmaransstad, “proving that ultra-fast, off-grid charging can serve heavy-duty freight and everyday motorists at the same time”.

Each Charge site also houses a farmstall experience.

“Each charging station is not only focused on charging – it’s all about our guests enjoying the experience and feeling welcome,” says Roux.

The N3 Roadside station is located at the Reitz Roadside Interchange, exit 107, west side, with N3 Tugela site at the Colenso–Winterton Interchange, exit 207, west side.
