PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore developer Centaurus Metals has reported an increase in the mineral resource estimate at its flagship Jambreiro project, in Brazil.

The project was now estimated to host a Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource of 128-million tonnes, grading 27.2% iron, up from the previous estimate of 125.2-million tonnes at 26.7% iron, which Centaurus said was the foundation to extend the project’s mine life.

The new resource estimate also featured a 6% increase in the measured and indicated friable itabirite component, which was now estimated at 56.9-million tonnes, grading 28.7% iron.

The friable itabirite resource underpins the current proven and probable ore reserve of 48.5-million tonnes on which the bankable feasibility study (BFS) was based.

Centaurus MD Darren Gordon noted that the increase in the measured and indicated friable mineral resource provided the company with a high level of confidence in the robustness and quality of the Jambreiro project.

“We are pleased to have tightened up the Jambreiro resource base with enhanced data ahead of the finalisation of a revised mine plan and new ore reserve estimate,” said Gordon.

He added that the company had successfully been implementing a number of important enhancements to the Jambreiro project while it completed negotiations for long-term product offtake.

He noted that the new mineral resource would provide the basis for a new mining sequence to tie in with other mine optimisation work.

“We expect to achieve a high conversion of measured and indicated friable itabirite resource to ore reserve once this work is completed in October, as was demonstrated at the time of the BFS late last year.”

Centaurus has started detailed engineering works on the Jambreiro project and recently received the installation licence for the project, allowing on-site construction to start.

First production has been targeted for mid-2014.
