Cell C spends R200m on Gauteng network upgrade
Mobile operator Cell C will roll out an additional 100 sites in Johannesburg over the next three months to increase its network capacity and improve service quality.
Sandton, Fourways, Bryanston, Morningside, Soweto and Benoni were some of the areas that have been earmarked for the additional sites – the first 19 of which will be on air by the end of this month.
This was in addition to 959 sites it already had in Johannesburg, as well as the additional 70 indoor coverage sites the company plans to roll out in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
“Traffic on our network has doubled over the past year and we’ve been hard at work rolling out new sites and installing additional capacity to cater for this growth and restore quality,” CEO Alan Knott-Craig commented on Thursday.
He added that the company’s network in Johannesburg and Pretoria, in particular, had been taking strain.
Earlier this month, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa published the results of its latest Quality of Service Monitoring Test Reports for the Johannesburg and Pretoria region, which found that Cell C and rival MTN had not met the average drop call rate targets in Johannesburg.
Meanwhile, Knott-Craig said Cell C was, in addition to building new sites, optimising its existing sites as part of efforts to improve coverage and service.
“We expect these activities to be completed by the end of November.”
