Cell C makes strides, reaching 13m customers
South Africa’s third-largest mobile operator experienced significant gains as it increased its network coverage and capacity, and improved service quality for its ever-growing base of subscribers, Cell C chief commercial officer and acting CEO Jose Dos Santos said on Thursday.
The group recorded millions of net subscriber additions over the past year – reaching the 13-million mark for the first time – after embarking on an aggressive strategy to gain market share and lower prices.
This was up from the recorded base of more than 11.5-million in July – a momentum expected to continue well into the new year.
Cell C also added 298 new coverage sites over the past three months, which had translated into a “huge” improvement in call connections and retention, as well as improved average revenue per user, Dos Santos told media at a breakfast briefing in Rosebank.
He noted that Cell C’s call performance was nearing that of the South African industry norm of 97% to 98%.
But there was still “a long way to go”.
In light of the rapid growth, Cell C, which now had over 4 000 sites nationwide, would continue building capacity into the network and roll out another 350 to 360 sites, with particular focus on metropolitan areas, by June next year.
Prior to the company’s massive network upgrade, the system had been taking strain, particularly in Johannesburg and Pretoria, after Cell C gained popularity with its aggressive price cuts.
Meanwhile, CEO Alan Knott-Craig, who suffered a minor stroke two weeks ago, was doing well and expected to make a full recovery.
