Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation committed to two objectives: providing medical assistance to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion, natural and man-made disasters; and speaking out about the plight of the populations assisted. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.
To celebrate the legacy of late struggle doctor activist, Dr Neil Aggett, Doctors Without Borders SA and Neil Aggett Support Group host a symposium on 4 October. The symposium investigates how healthcare workers become agents of change.
The objective of the symposium is to use the tradition of Dr Neil Aggett to inspire activism to challenge inequities in access to quality healthcare in South Africa. MSF as a co-host hopes to use the international experience and best practice models from its medical humanitarian work to build solidarity that is operationally and medically relevant to the most vulnerable people.
Polity.org.za's Motshabi Hoaeane speaks to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Head of Programmes Unit Sharon Ekambaram about this legacy as well as the organisation's projects in South Africa.
