Name of the Project
Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) upgrade.

Location
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).

Project Description
The CTIA has several key infrastructure projects planned over the next five years.

The upgrade will include:

• the refurbishment of the domestic arrivals terminal, which will include an express exit route available to passengers who only have ‘carry on’ luggage and do not need to collect bags, as well as a new, bigger meet-and-greet area and an expanded retail area.

• the expansion of the international terminal, which will include the expansion of the check-in area for international passengers, the addition of two baggage collection carousels and the reconfiguration of the security, customs, passport control and meet-and-greet areas.

• a new realigned runway, which will allow for the expansion of the terminals in future. CTIA will also construct parallel and rapid exit taxiways. The realigned runway will be 3 500 m long.

The new runway will allow for the number of landings and departures per hour to inceease from 30 to 45 aircraft movements.

It will also enable the airport to handle new-generation large aircraft such as the Boeing 747-800 or the A380s.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
The upgrade will involve an investment of about R7.5-billion over the next five years, including an estimated R688-million for the new domestic arrivals terminal, R2.8-billion for the expansion of the international terminal and R3.93-billion for the realignment of the runway.

Planned Start/End Date
The refurbishment of domestic arrivals terminal is expected to start construction in early 2020 and take 30 months to complete.

If all goes according to plan, the expansion of the international terminal will start towards the end of 2019, with the facility to be commissioned in December 2023.

Construction of the realigned runway is expected to start in early 2020. ACSA envisions a 24-month construction period and a six-month commissioning period.

Latest Developments
A professional team has been appointed and is completing the tender documentation for the expansion of the international terminal.

The project for the realigned runway is in the tender preparation phase.
