The Canadian International Development Agency (Cida) would inject C$10-million into the South African National Treasury's Technical Assistance Unit (Tau) over the next five years, the Treasury said on Thursday.

The National Treasury's Tau initiative had been, over the past 12 years, tasked with improving South African government agencies’ efficiency, performance and effectiveness, as well as the quality of public service spend.

In providing technical and advisory services and management support to government, Tau operated several projects, including the Financial Intelligence Centre for operational support and the Department of Monitoring and Evaluation, in the Presidency.

Cida had contributed about R86-million since 2007, which Tau had used to support 213 departments and public entities, the Treasaury said in a statement.

South Africa’s Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and Canada’s International Cooperation Minister Julian Fantino concluded the agreement on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on Africa, held in Cape Town this week.
