PERTH (miningweekly.com) – An initial mine development and coal seam access design for the proposed Buck Creek No 2 mine, in the US, has confirmed the project's potential to be a low-cost development, owner Paringa Resources said on Monday.

As a result of the shallow nature of the coal seam, access to the proposed Buck Creek No 2 mine would be provided through a combination of boxcut and drifts for ventilation and transport. The boxcut and drift design would now be incorporated into the scoping study currently being undertaken for the mine.

“The technical study for Buck Creek No 2 mine has yielded extremely positive results after evaluating a number of development options,” said Paringa president and CEO David Gay.

“These results will now provide a strong platform to rapidly progress a more comprehensive scoping study for the project, which we plan to complete during the fourth quarter of 2015.”

The combination of the shallow depth of the coal seam and the ability to access the coal through a boxcut and drift design, would lower the cost of developing the mine.

“The combined boxcut and low-angle drift method is the preferred choice in the Illinois basin, as it significantly reduces the construction costs and timeframe for shallow deposits such as ours.”

The Buck Creek No 2 mine forms part of the greater Buck Creek mining complex, which has a Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant measured and indicated resource of 211-million tonnes, and a marketable proven ore reserve of 16.4-million tonnes, and a further probable 46.3-million tonnes.
