Brockman appoints Aurizon to develop Pilbara rail, port infrastructure
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Australia- and Hong Kong-listed Brockman Australia this week tasked Aurizon with the development and operation of the port and rail infrastructure required for its Marillana and Ophthalmia projects.
The three-year relationship agreement would see the parties cooperatively develop and implement a long-term rail haulage and port solution for transporting and exporting Brockman-produced iron-ore.
The Chinese miner is hoping to haul up to 20-million tonnes a year of hematite ore from Marillana over 20 years, starting in 2016.
Aurizon would procure and operate all the required rail, rolling stock and related heavy-haul rail infrastructure and develop and operate port facilities using the port allocation of North West Infrastructure (NWI) – a joint venture formed between Brockman, Atlas Iron and FerrAus to facilitate the construction of a port facility.
Brockman said in a statement on Wednesday that the agreement complemented previous studies undertaken by Aurizon, Brockman and Atlas regarding the development of the proposed East Pilbara Independent Railway and its integration with the proposed NWI port facilities in Port Hedland.
Brockman last month also applied to the state government for access to bigger rival Fortescue’s rail line. The company is seeking access to Fortescue’s railway from around the 219 km point on the The Pilbara Infrastructure (TPI) main line, from which it would construct a rail spur to its Marillana project and to the 23 km point on the TPI main line, near Port Hedland, from which it would build a rail spur to the NWI port facilities.
