The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) has been tasked with establishing, nurturing and growing a South African version of the think tanks currently operating within its Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (Brics) counterparts.

The HSRC was appointed as the incubator for the South Africa Brics Think Tank for a period of one year, as the country prepared to host the Brics Summit in Durban from March 26 to 27.

The first incubator workshop, co-chaired by HSRC CEO Dr Olive Shisana and the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET’s) Dr Diane Parker, would be hosted on March 8 and 9 to map out the route towards a long-term strategy for such a think tank.

The main aim of the think tank, which would be operated within the HSRC’s legislated mandate as an independent adviser to government, was to undertake evidence-based policy analysis, guiding an inclusive long-term Brics strategy.

The council pointed out that it would also create a forum to facilitate discussion among academics, scholars, policymakers and nongovernmental organisations interested in the development of the Brics developmental strategy.

Further, the HSRC aimed to cooperate with various local experts and organisations in the field to strengthen and build analytical and scholarly capacity in this area.

The DHET and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation were the government departments overseeing the project.
