JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – US publicly-traded company Brazil Minerals (BMIX) is currently investigating the possibility of supplying its sand for fracking purposes.

The company explained on Thursday that it had provided five different types of sand for detailed laboratory analysis for potential use in the fracking industry, adding that there was a sizeable market in Brazil for fracking sand, which was also exported.

BMIX had access to a multitude of different types of sand from its dozens of minerals rights areas and was beginning a process to identify potential locations for supply.

The company had been approached by both a North American fracking sand company and a Brazilian enterprise about a possible joint venture.

BMIX was in the “very initial stages” of considering such possibilities.

“Since the technical analysis process has just begun, BMIX does not know yet if any of its sands will ever be able to qualify to be sold as proppant,” the company added.
