Botswana is celebrating 60 years of independence in 2026, marking the journey from 1966 and honouring a heritage of excellence in mining. As the country reflects on this legacy, it is looking ahead, seeking to use the experience gained over decades to help shape and sustain the next 60 years of development.

A central focus is a renewed drive to unlock Botswana’s mineral potential. Government is reevaluating and reassessing the information gathered through past exploration and is building on that base to open up the roughly 70% of the country that has not yet been explored.

Mining Weekly interviewed Botswana Minerals and Energy Minister Bogolo Joy Kenewendo at the Investing in African Mining Indaba on Wednesday, where she said to support this ambition, Botswana has established a national exploration company.

The intention is for the new entity to partner with the private sector to significantly expand exploration activity, and the country is actively looking for collaborators in this space.
