Year of Formation and Background to Founding:
Following an international tender process, in 2006 the Bombela Concession Company was appointed by the Gauteng Provincial Government to design, build, operate, maintain and partially finance the Gautrain project. The Gautrain project is a Public-Private Partnership that includes a 15-year contract for the maintenance and operation of the Gautrain rapid rail system.

The Bombela Concession Company implemented its obligations through diverse contractual relationships, with the primary contract being the Concession Agreement, which is held between the Gauteng Provincial Government and the Bombela Concession Company.

The Gautrain connects Gauteng’s three major metropolitan areas of Johannesburg, Pretoria and Ekurhuleni with an integrated transport system that has expanded to ten stations operating along 80 km of route alignment.

The Gautrain is South Africa’s first, premier rapid rail transport system that has been built to exacting international transportation and safety regulations. Gautrain trains travel at a maximum speed of 160 km/h, connecting Hatfield station with Johannesburg Park station in about 42 minutes, and Sandton station with the OR Tambo International Airport in less than 15 minutes.

In addition, a fleet of Gautrain buses serve over twenty bus routes that provide access to nine of our ten train stations (OR Tambo excluded). A midi-bus service also provides an additional shuttle service along select routes.

Company Mission, Products & Services:
In cooperation with the Bombela Operating Company and the Gautrain Management Agency, our mission is to provide a safe, comfortable, clean and reliable integrated transport system and to strive for continuous improvement for the benefit of all Gautrain customers and other stakeholders.

The safety of our staff and passengers is a top priority to us, as such various security measures are in place at stations to ensure the well-being of passengers and securing the Gautrain infrastructure.

Additionally, since the outbreak of Covid-19, we have implemented various precautionary measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Current Shareholders:
Since 2017, Bombela Concession Company has been a 100% proudly South African-owned company with Murray & Roberts being the majority shareholder.

Greatest Corporate Achievement:
We are proud to say that in comparison to similar modes of public transport across the world and with an average punctuality of 98.55%, Gautrain is one of the most reliable passenger train services in the world. Gautrain is also a greener, safer and more efficient mode of transport.

Continuous innovation saw the introduction of contactless bank card payment solutions in 2019, which can be used to pay for any of the train, parking and bus services – an achievement we are proud of.  Customers can make use of their contactless credit, debit and cheque cards as well as National Department of Transport travel card to travel on Gautrain.

Our aim is to continue to provide an efficient, clean, reliable and safe integrated transport system.

Hope for the Future:
To achieve a more integrated transport system, that will service the needs of more people in our country and to encourage more people to make use of the public transport system.

It is Bombela’s continued vision to provide not only a world-class transport system to Gauteng, but also to help reduce South Africa’s carbon emissions, thereby rendering South Africa greener, safer, more connected and more efficient as a nation.
Our vision is to achieve excellence in the execution of the Gautrain Concession Contract and to be recognised as a world leader in concession contract management.
