JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Blasting activities have been suspended at platinum miner Aquarius Platinum’s Kroondal mine’s Kwezi shaft to allow for a forensic investigation following the discovery of a body.

Aquarius reported that the body of a female employee had been found underground in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and that a forensic investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) was under way.

“While the circumstances of the incident cannot be disclosed, it was apparent during the initial investigation that the woman may have been assaulted,” the platinum miner said.

Aquarius stated that it deplored any incidence of violence and that it would work closely with the SAPS, the Department of Mineral Resources and employee representatives to support the woman’s family and the investigation.
