BMW launches campaign to repair airbags on older 3 Series models
The BMW Group was replacing the front passenger airbag in around 220 000 BMW 3 Series (E46) models produced from December 2001 to March 2003, said BMW South Africa group communications and public affairs GM Guy Kilfoil on Tuesday.
Around 6 000 cars were affected in South Africa, he noted.
There was a risk that, in the event of an accident, the airbag would not inflate sufficiently.
“So far, BMW is unaware of a single incident of this kind, either internationally or locally. Instead, we learned of the potential problem through information given to us by our supplier,” said Kilfoil.
“The vehicles affected were built in 3 Series plants around the world with parts from a single international supplier that has also had to make similar recalls with other manufacturers.”
Some of the affected cars were assembled at the BMW plant in Rosslyn, near to Pretoria.
“We will be contacting all locally affected customers to have the passenger airbag unit replaced at their nearest dealer,” noted Kilfoil.
“This will take around one hour and will be free of charge to the customer. However, because we are dealing with cars older than ten years old in some cases, and which may have had several owners, it is important that owners of vehicles that might be affected contact the BMW Customer Care Centre on 0800 600 555 so that we can ensure we have the correct customer data for the vehicles in question.”
Kilfoil noted that customers should not be alarmed by the “technical campaign”, which he regarded as a precautionary action, taken even in cases where the likelihood of the problem was very low.
“We believe in taking preventative measures and customers can continue to drive their vehicles until such time as they are able to book their vehicle in for repair.”
