BLSA responds to Nkandla report
The success of South Africa’s fight against corruption and maladministration will be judged by the way it tackles impropriety at all levels of government and business, Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) said on the release of the Public Protector’s report on the investigation into alleged impropriety and unethical conduct related to the President’s private residence at Nkandla.
"We urge our government to respect and support the Public Protector, and to respond positively to the corrective actions recommended in this report," BLSA said in a statement.
BLSA, an association representing South African leaders of big business as well as leaders of multinational corporations in the country, believed the report provided sound evidence of the power and effectiveness of Chapter Nine institutions, as provided for in South Africa's Constitution, to hold government accountable at the highest levels of public office.
BLSA further welcomed comments by the African National Congress secretary general Gwede Mantashe that intimated all those found guilty of violations by the report will be pursued and that the State will recover costs.
"Similarly, we urge all sectors of our society, including the business community, to act decisively to expose corruption and the misuse of public funds," it said.
