Big Almaty ring road (Bakad) project.

Location
The project runs through the territory of Almaty Oblast, in Kazakhstan.

Project Owner/s
Bakad Investment and Operation, which is owned by Alsim Alarko Sanayi Tesisleri ve Ticaret (33.3%), Makyol Insaat Sanayi Turizm ve Ticaret (33.3%), SK Engineering and Construction (33.3%), and Korea Expressway Corporation (0.10%).

Project Description
The Bakad project is a toll motor road that will form part of a ring road around the northern border of the city of Almaty.

The project entails the construction of a 66-km-long half-ring road in the north of Almaty.

The route runs through Karasay district in the west (27.5 km), Iliy district in the north (19.3 km) and Talgar district in the east (19.2 km).

The road will comprise a 51.5-km-long, six-lane section and a 14.5-km-long four-lane section.

The project includes the construction of
147 culverts, 20 bridges, eight interchanges, 22 overpasses and about 1300 m of reinforced concrete retaining walls in the road cuts.

Potential Job Creation
An average of about 1 000 workers are expected to be employed during the 50 months of construction, with a workforce of 1 700 at the peak, including the contractors’ and subcontractors’ workforce.

The operational and maintenance phase of the project will generate employment for about
60 staff.

Capital Expenditure
The project is estimated at $750-million.

Planned Start /End Date
The construction phase is expected to start in the second quarter of 2019 and to be completed in the second half of 2023. This will be followed by a 16-year operating period.
