PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant BHP Billiton on Monday confirmed that it would cut staff numbers at its Mt Whaleback iron-ore operation, in the Pilbara, by 170.

A spokesperson told Mining Weekly Online that the multi-commodity miner’s iron-ore division had, for some time, been committed to its productivity agenda of growing its volumes while reducing its costs.

“This focus on productivity is not new; it is about safely improving our business and ensuring we are a competitive, world-class operation. BHP Billiton Iron Ore regularly undertakes reviews to ensure that our business is operating as efficiently as possible,” she added.

The spokesperson said that the review included reviewing the size and structure of BHP’s workforce to ensure it supported the delivery of the company’s productivity agenda.

“We have been open with our employees about the work being done to improve productivity. In situations where employees are impacted we will undertake every effort to assist them throughout the process and to seek redeployment opportunities where possible.”

Mt Whaleback mine, established in 1968, is the biggest single-pit opencut iron-ore mine in the world being more than 5 km long and nearly 1.5 km wide.

BHP did not expect the redundancy programme to affect operations at the mine.
