PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX- and TSX-listed gold miner Besra has temporarily suspended operations at its Bong Mieu mine, in central Vietnam.

The miner said on Tuesday that several landslides in the region had cut roads between the mine site and the provincial capital of Tam Ky, preventing employees and supplies from accessing the site.

The main transport road within the site also suffered substantial damage and was considered unusable.

The landslides and road closures resulted from the recent heavy rains caused by two typhoons that passed over, or near, central Vietnam during the last month.

Besra said that owing to the extent of the damage, the company was unable to give a definite date of when operations would restart, adding that it was working with local authorities on damage control.

The Bong Mieu mine was commissioned in 2006, and has capacity of some 500 t/d. For 2014, Besra’s consolidated gold production was expected to reach between 65 000 oz and 70 000 oz.
