Belview underground coking coal project, Australia
Name and Location
Belview underground coking coal project, Queensland, Australia.
Client
Stanmore Coal.
Project Description
The Belview project includes coal tenements EPC1114 and EPC1186, and lies east of the Blackwater, on the eastern side of Queensland’s Bowen basin.
An updated concept mining study on the project has considered 3.5-million tons a year of run-of-mine (RoM) coal produced from a single underground longwall operation.
A second longwall unit could increase production to seven-million tons a year of RoM.
Value
Start-up capital requirements for a single longwall operation are estimated at $869-million. This includes one men-and-materials drift at an angle of one in eight (regular mobile diesel design compliant), one coal conveyor drift at one in six and one initial return ventilation shaft.
The addition of a second longwall unit will add an estimated $529-million to the capital expenditure.
Duration
Construction is expected to start in the second half of 2015, with first coal expected in 2017.
Latest Developments
Given the positive economics demonstrated by the concept study, Stanmore plans to conduct further exploration work and geological modelling, including drilling, geotechnical stability analysis, coal quality analysis and seismic surveys, to improve resource confidence during 2013.
It also intends starting a prefeasibility study in the second half of the 2013.
