The South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (Safcec) on Tuesday announced that the Building Construction and Allied Workers Union (BCAWU) had accepted the wage offer tabled by employers in the civil engineering and construction industry.

The offer allowed for a 10% wage increase for categories Task Grade 1 to 4, and an 8% wage increase for categories Task Grade 5 to 9.

The agreement signed between Safcec and BCAWUwould remain operational until August 31, 2016.

Compared to the last industry strike action in 2009, this year’s strike season was quickly resolved as a result of all parties’ commitment and optimism for a speedy wage negotiation process, Safcec stated.

“The federation commends BCAWU and employers on their efforts and commitment over the last few days to reach an agreement. We believe this sets an example to other sectors currently experiencing labour unrest.  We hope that work on affected projects will restart as quickly as possible and that every effort will be made to make up for any delay, for the benefit of our clients,” Safcec president Norman Milne commented.
