Barloworld Power, the South African Navy and Southern African Shipyards have partnered to donate a fully functional computer room to a school in KwaZulu-Natal on Mandela Day 2014. Ten desktop computers, with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office installed, were handed over to the Charles Sabelo secondary school in Umbumbulu, 58 km south-west of Durban, on Friday 18 July. Theo Jooste, operations manager of Barloworld Power’s Industrial and Rental business, approached the SA Navy and Southern African Shipyards, both long term customers, and the project was born.
”It is a great honour and privilege for Barloworld Power to be involved in this initiative,” said Jooste. “It is appropriate that the unveiling of the computer room at the school falls on a day devoted to a man who was passionate about our youth and education.”The computers were handed over by Vice Admiral Johannes Mudimu, chairman of ARMSCOR and retired Chief of the SA Navy. The school was built in 1972 by the late Charles Sabelo on his own land to reduce the distance children had to travel to school every day. Until 1994 the school continued to be privately funded, after which the government took ownership and it became state owned.
The school has 476 learners in grades 8 to 12.Charles Sabelo’s granddaughter, Nana Sabelo, is still actively involved in fundraising for the school, which boasts a 78% matric pass rate and includes maths and science in its curriculum. For more information on this initiative, contact +27 11 898 0000 or visit www.barloworldpower.com
