TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – TSX-listed Banro Corp, which is focused on the 210-km long Twangiza-Namoya gold belt, in the South Kivu and Maniema provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on Tuesday announced that it had kick-started first gold output from its new Namoya mine, having poured 320 oz of the yellow metal by the end of December.

Namoya was Banro's second gold mine to come into production in just more than two years, the other being its flagship Twangiza operation, located 210 km to the northeast.

The gold making took place while the company was commissioning the heap-leach loaded carbon, elution and electrowinning operations.

Banro said that completing the Namoya plant would continue in step with commissioning operations into the first quarter of the New Year, with the aim to achieve commercial production before the end of the second quarter.

Output from Namoya was expected to propel Banro from a one-mine company with less than 100 000 oz/y, to a two-mine company targeting more than 225 000 oz/y of gold.

Namoya is an openpit mining operation with a hybrid gravity/carbon-in-leach   and heap leach extraction process.
