PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Northern Midlands Council has given its backing to bauxite developer Australian Bauxite (ABx) to develop its Bald Hill mine, in Tasmania.

ABx said on Tuesday that work was under way to secure the site, with construction on the ore haulage roads and fences expected to start shortly.

“The final approval by Northern Minerals Council paves the way for ABx to commence mining operations on schedule, a credit to all concerned,” said ABx COO Leon Hawker.

The Tasmania Environment Protection Authority approved the project earlier this month.

“Our expectation is that 45 direct jobs will be created at the mine, in transport, at Bell Bayport and in administration as a consequence of the Bald Hill mine. A multiple number of additional indirect jobs will arise as operations expand,” Hawker added.

Initial production at Bald Hill was planned to be around 500 000 t/y of direct-shipping-ore-quality bauxite. Production would be scaled up over the next two years to about two-million tonnes a year.

The project was expected to require a capital investment of around A$4.5-million.

“This is the first new bauxite mine in Australia for over 35 years and will introduce a new bauxite supply into the seaborne bauxite market when the market is strong. It is an exciting time for the company, its shareholders and staff,” Hawker said.
