JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Boleo project, which TSX-V-listed Baja Mining owns with a consortium of Korean companies, has taken a knock this week as one senior executive advancing the project was confirmed dead and a second executive went missing after a tropical storm swept through the region.

Baja Mining, which owns its 10% stake in the copper/zinc/manganese project through Minera y Metalurgica del Boleo S.A.P.I. de C.V. (MMB), reported on Thursday that MMB COO Kyoung Jin Park had drowned in a flash flood in the town of Santa Rosalia. MMB CEO Sung Keun Chai was thought to have been with Park at the time of the incident and was currently missing.

“The leadership of these two executives has been important in advancing the Boleo project and Mr Park and Mr Chai, if confirmed deceased, will be greatly missed,” Baja stated.

Activity at the copper/zinc/manganese Boleo project remained halted on Thursday, as site clean-up continued. The heavy rains and high winds of the tropical storm, which was downgraded from a hurricane by the time it reached the region where the project is located, had knocked out electricity and communications in the region, but did not cause notable damage to the project site.

MMB is owned by a consortium of Korean companies with a 90% vested interest, while the remaining 10% is owned by Baja Mining.
