The project is located about 250 km north of Baghdad, in northern Iraq.

Project Description
The Baiji power plants were severely damaged by Islamic State militants.

The project involves reconstructing the power plants, which will generate 1.6 GW.

The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs.

Planned Start/End Date
The projects are expected to be completed within 28 months after financial closing.

Work on the project will begin once the contracts are approved by Iraq’s Council of Ministers and a financial agreement is reached with the Ministry of Finance.

Latest Developments
Siemens and Orascom Construction signed an agreement with Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity to rebuild the Baiji 1 and Baiji 2 power plants in September this year.

The projects will be executed on an engineering, procurement, construction plus finance (EPC + finance) basis.

Siemens will supply four new gas turbines and will inspect and revamp six exiting ones. The company will also provide two 400 kV and one 132 kV substations, along with generators, auxiliaries, automation and control systems, as well as related electrical equipment.

The contract is valued at $1.3-billion.
