Less than a year after resuming flights between Johannesburg and Maputo, British Airways (BA) halted the route for a second time, saying the service was not viable.

The Comair-operated airline, which launched a two-day-a-week flight schedule to Maputo from OR Tambo International Airport in May 2013, said the service would discontinue from Saturday, February 8.

“After much consideration and review we have decided to withdraw the Maputo route to ensure our airline remains sustainable,” said Comair commercial distribution executive Iain Meaker.

BA had initially operated the route from Lanseria Airport, which was halted in January 2012 after the operator deemed it commercially unviable.

Comair noted in a statement that customers who had already booked to travel the route with BA would be accommodated on South African Airways flights at no additional cost.
