TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – North American gold miner AuRico Gold on Thursday achieved commercial production at its Young-Davidson underground mine, 60 km west of Kirkland Lake, in Northern Ontario, after the shaft and hoisting infrastructure were successfully commissioned.

The shaft-hoisting infrastructure was a critical project milestone that would unlock the potential of the underground mine and would support increased underground productivities and favourable unit cost efficiencies over the life of the mine.

"Commissioning the shaft marks the successful completion of a three-year construction project that would position the Young-Davidson mine for long-term success,” COO Peter MacPhail said.

The mine is expected to produce between 120 000 oz and 140 000 oz of gold this year.
