PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal hopeful Atrum Coal has increased the footprint of its Groundhog anthracite project, in British Columbia.

The company on Wednesday told shareholders that it had been granted an additional four coal licences over the project area, taking its Groundhog concession to 26 coal licences and 11 licence applications.

“The additional coal licences granted at Groundhog offer Atrum the opportunity to increase the anthracite inventory. Recent prefeasibility results focused on only two of more than 20 anthracite seams in an area representing less than 5% of the total Groundhog project,” said Atrum chairperson James Chisholm.

He noted that in the longer term, Atrum would seek to identify further areas at Groundhog, including areas recently granted, which could provide low impact mine expansion opportunities.

The underground Groundhog operation was expected to deliver 5.4-million tonnes a year run-of-mine coal over a 16-year mine life, and would require a capital investment of $10-million in 2014, and a further $67.1-million in 2015.
