Project Description
The treatment plant aims to deal with the potable water supply deficit in the Accra and Tema metropolises. The project consists of the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of:
• a 432 000 m3/d treatment plant, located downstream of the Kpong dam on the Volta river, in the Asutsuare region, south-east of Ghana;
• two water transportation pipelines of about 73 km each, with a target output of 180 000 m3/d, from the water treatment plant to bulk delivery points in the Grand Accra area; and
• water reservoirs, with respective capacities of 35 000 m3 and 50 000 m3 at Legon and Pokuase.
Value
The project will cost an estimated €500-million to implement.
Duration
The project will be completed in two phases, with the first phase expected to take three years to complete and the second phase two years.
Latest Developments
The International Finance Corporation has been appointed as lead arranger for the project and intends to directly provide a mix of senior and subordinated loans of up to €125-million, in addition to mobilising up to €275-million of debt from other institutions.
