Arrium increases shipments despite weather impacts
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed iron-ore miner Arrium Mining & Materials has reported record year-to-date shipments despite adverse weather conditions.
During the nine months under review, iron-ore shipments increased 9.3-million tonnes, a 73% increase on the previous corresponding period.
Arrium told shareholders on Thursday that the increased production was owing to prestripping waste movements at its Iron Knob mining area, in South Australia, following the restart of operations in December last year.
Crushing and ore beneficiation at the Middleback Ranges project, also in South Australia, increased by 30% and 14% respectively, compared with the previous corresponding period.
During the three quarters to March, Arrium reported a 54% increase in shipments, to 3.03-million tonnes from 1.97-million tonnes a year earlier.
Arrium said that it maintained shipping volumes during the quarter through a range of initiatives, which included the higher use of rail assets due to the availability of increased crushed material, and the optimisation of volumes through the inner and outer harbour of the Whyalla port.
