Pan-African industrial parks developer Arise IIP has been awarded a carbon neutral certification for its Gabon special economic zone (SEZ).
The certification provides a transparent third-party assessment of the SEZ’s carbon footprint and offsetting.
In the past years, Arise IIP has been executing a climate and biodiversity strategy to reduce its environmental footprint, invest in low-carbon solutions and monetise environmental services and assets.
The Gabon SEZ focuses on measuring and managing greenhouse gases (GHGs), using increasingly more timber as a building material and renewable energy sources to supply the park with carbon-free electricity.
Swiss certification leader SGS has been appointed as the carbon auditor of the park, while environmental company Aera has been mandated to coordinate the GHG measurement and improve the data collection system at the SEZ.
Arise CEO and cofounder Gagan Gupta says the Gabon SEZ is using best-in-class practices and the highest international standards to meet its target of carbon-neutral industrialisation.
This provides a replicable framework for all the company’s industrial zones and will lead to a clean transformation across its footprint in Africa.
Africa Finance Corporation CEO Samaila Zubairu adds that the certification of the Gabon SEZ demonstrates how businesses can drive climate action, setting an example for the private sector worldwide.
