Name and Location
Arinaga Quay offshore wind project, Canary Islands, Spain.

Client
Gamesa.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of Spain’s first offshore wind power project at the Arinaga Quay, in the Canary Islands.

The offshore system will have a 5 MW capacity.

This offshore system, with a rotor diameter of 128 m and a modular, redundant design, ensures reliability and maximises energy output.

The offshore turbine is equipped with the proved and validated technology of Gamesa’s 4.5 MW system, plus the know-how and experience acquired during the 4.5 MW system’s roll-out.

In addition to the offshore system, Gamesa plans to develop higher-capacity offshore turbines of between 7 MW and 8 MW in the medium to long term.

Value
Not stated.

Duration
Gamesa expects the turbine to begin operating in the third quarter of 2013 and aims to secure certification thereafter.

Latest Developments
Gamesa inaugurated the company's maiden offshore wind turbine – and the first to be installed in Spain – in Arinaga Quay on October 21.

The G128-5 MW wind turbine, the first 5 MW offshore platform prototype, has a 128-m-diameter rotor and a total height of 154 m. Since it started operating in July last year, it has been producing energy at full capacity, dispatching more than 1 GWh to the grid in that time and generating enough power to supply 7 500 households in the Canary Islands each year.

The facility's start-up is a prerequisite in the process of securing type certification, slated for the first quarter of 2014. Mass production will start next year.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Gamesa and Daniel Alonso (tower).

On Budget and on Time?
