Project Description
The project involved the development of an underground block cave at the Argyle diamond mine in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

The move from openpit mining to an underground operation will extend the life of Argyle until at least 2020.

The average yearly production over the life of the underground mine is likely to be 20-million carats a year.

Value
$2.2-billion.

Duration
Following a transition from the current openpit operation, the underground mine will be fully operational in 2013.

Latest Developments
Rio Tinto opened the new Argyle underground diamond mine in the east Kimberley region of Western Australia at the end of April.

The underground mine uses the latest in block-caving technology and is the first of its kind in Western Australia.

The project was slowed in 2009, owing to the global financial crisis.
