April proved a disappointing month for the local truck industry.

The latest sales results from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa, Associated Motor Holdings and Amalgamated Automobile Distributors, show that 2 350 trucks were sold during April – a 7.63% decline on the same month last year.

“Declines were recorded across all the segments, mainly due to some unfavourable economic conditions, as well as the loss of a number of production and trading days as a result of the many public holidays during April,” said UD Trucks Southern Africa MD Jacques Carelse on Monday.

When compared with the results of April last year, sales in the medium commercial vehicle (MCV) segment declined by 14.35% to 776 units.

Sales in the heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) segment slowed by 0.49% to 404 units, while extra-heavy commercial vehicle (EHCV) sales were down 3.88% to 1 091 units.

The biggest loser was the bus segment, which experienced an 18.56% decline, to sell a meagre 79 units.

The picture looks slightly different when sales are analysed on a year-to-date basis, with growth still evident in the HCV (2.65%), EHCV (7.47%) and bus (4.45%) segments.

“Despite the difficult trading conditions experienced during April, the total truck market still reported a 2.42% year-to-date growth, and remains on track to post a modest 4.5% increase in sales for the year,” said Carelse.

He added that UD Trucks was looking forward to an exciting number of months, starting with the introduction of a new UD 90 ATM, as well as the new Quon GW 26 450 – a long distance commodity mover that will compete in the 440 hp to 460 hp market.
