Name: Antapaccay mine.

Location: The Antapaccay mine and processing facilities are located 4 100 m above sea level in the Yauri district of the Espinar province, in southern Peru’s Cusco region.

Controlling Company: Xstrata Copper.

Brief History: Xstrata Copper acquired the Antapaccay deposit from BHP Billiton in 2006 and rapidly advanced the project through conceptual and feasibility studies to full production. The project was approved in July 2010 and started production of commercial-grade copper in concentrates at the beginning of November 2012.

Brief Description: Antapaccay is a long-life, low-cost copper operation, with a mine life of more than 20 years. The mine is situated about 10 km from Xstrata Copper’s Tintaya mine. The development of the Antapaccay deposit will convert the existing Tintaya operation into a long-life asset. Antapaccay will initially produce an average of 160 000 t/y of copper in concentrate, as well as gold and silver by-products.

Mining Method: Openpit.

Products: Copper, and gold and silver as by-products.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The Tintaya openpit pit will be used to store tailings from Antapaccay.

Ore from the Antapaccay mine will be processed in a new 70 000 t/d single-line, sulphide grinding/flotation concentrator facility and will be transported by truck to Port Matarani for export.

Geology/Mineralisation: Antapaccay is characterised as a copper skarn deposit, which consists of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks intruded by monzonitic plutons, with bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and copper oxides as the main copper-bearing minerals.

Resources: Total measured and indicated resources as at June 30, 2012, were 730- million tons, with a grading of 0.54% copper, 0.12 g/t gold and 1.46 g/t silver. Total inferred resources were 300-million tons, with a grading of 0.4% copper, 0.05 g/t gold and 0.95 g/t silver.

Prospects: Plant commissioning activities continue at Antapaccay as it progressively ramps up to its nameplate processing capacity of 70 000 t/d in the first half of 2013.

Prefeasibility studies are also under way at the adjacent Coroccohuayco deposit, 9 km from the Antapaccay mine. If developed, Coroccohuayco could augment Antapaccay’s production and mine life.
