JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – A member of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) was stabbed to death on route to work at Anglo American Platinum’s (Amplat’s) Union mine, in Limpopo.

The Mozambique national, who was not named, was killed on Thursday at the Sondela squatter camp, in Rustenburg, after reporting for duty over the past week.

“He was [warned to] stop going to work by the striking workers. We are appealing to our government to do something about these killings," said NUM branch chairperson at Union mine Steve Modimokwane.

Last week, it was reported that four NUM members were killed amid the unrest and “escalating” violence in the platinum belt.

NUM, and its members, had not been part of the 17-week strike.

“Our members who are not part of this strike must be allowed to report for duty, but that is not happening,” said NUM general secretary Frans Baleni, stressing that there was no need for violence.
