The ruling African National Congress (ANC) promised on Tuesday to resolve the working conditions of its employees, as raised during national picketing.

ANC employees picketed outside the party offices over grievances on conditions of employment, such as late salary payments.

In a statement, the party says, like all workers in the country, ANC staff have the right to raise awareness of their legitimate grievances, within the laws of the country.

The party confirmed that staff members have since received their outstanding salary for May.

“We acknowledge as a movement that the issues raised by our staff – late salary payments, [and] their provident fund, medical aid and other conditions of employment – are legitimate, and the movement must do better to ensure that its staff are treated fairly,” said party spokesperson Pule Mabe in a statement.

In an interview on Monday, ANC treasurer general Paul Mashatile dismissed claims that the party has cashflow issues but blamed the recently passed Party Funding Act for what he called trickling of funds from party donors.

The party will look at auditing its staff and review whether some posts were still valuable.

The party says the current cashflow challenges faced by the movement are a result of a variety of factors, including the general economic situation, the implementation of the Political Party Funding Act since April, as well as an urgent need to modernise the ANC’s operational and funding models.

The ANC has committed to conclude the process of addressing this situation head-on and within the shortest possible time.
