JSE-listed Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) expects to report a 560% to 578% year-on-year increase in headline earnings for the six months ended June 30.

The company says in a trading statement that headline earnings are likely to be between R45.5-billion and R46.8-billion for the six months under review, compared with R6.9-billion in the corresponding six months last year.

The increase in headline earnings is primarily driven by a 29% increase in the rand basket price and an increase in sales volumes from Amplats’ own production.

The recovery in production in the period is owing to a lower impact from Covid-19, where the prior period was materially impacted by national lockdowns to curb the spread of Covid-19, as well as proven operational stability following the rebuild and recommissioning of the Anglo Converter Plant Phase A unit in November 2020.
