Communications solutions provider Alcatel-Lucent plans to upgrade the East African coast’s 10 000 km submarine cable with the latest 100 Gb/s technology.

The 4.72 Tb/s, two-fibre-pair Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) undersea cable, which went live in July 2010 with the then upgraded 3.84 Tb/s design capacity and a 25-year life, con- nects South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Kenya, the Comoros, Somalia, Djibouti and Sudan with multiple other submarine cable networks from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.

The company says that its 100 Gb/s technology will enable the system to ultimately carry capacity in excess of 10 Tb/s.

“Since EASSy entered service in 2010, we have seen enormous growth in demand for capacity on the system . . . This upgrade will add an additional 400 Gb/s of capacity throughout the system, using Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced coherent 100 Gb/s technology, and enables us to take a further step in offering our customers the ultrabroadband capacity needed for innovative services and applications,” explains EASSy chairperson Chris Wood.

The upgrade will further boost broadband capacity and strengthen onward connectivity between Eastern and Southern Africa and Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
