Name of the Project
Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project.

Location
The pipeline will start in Ajaokuta, in Kogi state, in Nigeria, traversing the Abuja, Niger and Kaduna states, and terminating in Kano state.

Project Owner/s
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a 40 inch × 614 km pipeline with the capacity to transport 2.2-billion cubic feet of gas a day.

The project will be undertaken in three phases. The first phase covers 200 km between Ajaokuta and Abuja. The second and the third phases cover 193 km and 221 km, from Abuja to Kaduna, and from Kaduna to Kano respectively.

The project will support the addition of 3 600 MW of power to the national grid and connect energy demand from the north of Nigeria with supply from the south, thereby enabling power-starved communities across the northern region to have greater access to electricity.

In addition, it will provide stranded commercial and industrial customers with a cleaner, more efficient source of self-generated energy. The project will enhance uptime at industrial clusters, enabling heavy-duty plants in northern parts of the country to return to internationally competitive operations.

It will also significantly curb gas flaring in the Niger Delta and guarantee better air quality in the oil-producing region while preserving the ecosystem.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
The project is estimated at $2.8-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Completion is expected in 24 months.

Latest Developments
About $2.6-billion has been approved by the Bank of China and Sinosure for the implementation of the project – 85% of the project will be funded by the two institutions and the NPCC will provide the rest of the funding through equity.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Brentex/China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau-CPP Consortia and Oilserve/China First Highway Engineering Company-CFHEC Consortia (engineering, procurement and construction contract).
