Name of the Mine
Ahafo mine.

Location
Ahafo region, Ghana.

Mine Owner/s
American gold mining company Newmont.

Brief Description
Ahafo has two primary ore zones: Ahafo South and Ahafo North.

Ahafo South is Ghana’s largest gold mine. It has two active openpits – Subika and Awonsu. Subika added an underground operation, which reached commercial production in November 2018, and Awonsu completed a layback in November 2019.

Ahafo North is the best unmined gold deposit in West Africa and consists of six openpits. It entered operation in October 2025.

Brief History
Commercial production at Ahafo started in 2006.

Primary Metals/Minerals
Gold.

Secondary Metals/Minerals
None stated.

Geology/Mineralisation
The Ahafo South mine encompasses three orogenic gold deposits that have oxide and primary mineralisation. Gold occurs primarily in pyrite and secondarily as native gold in quartz veins.

Ahafo North is an orogenic gold deposit with oxide and primary mineralisation.

Reserves
Ahafo South had total proven and probable reserves of 85-million tonnes grading 1.69 g/t gold, as at December 31, 2024.

Ahafo North had total proven and probable reserves as at December 31, 2024, of 62-million tonnes grading 2.32 g/t gold.

Resources
Total measured and indicated resources at Ahafo South were estimated at 38.2-million tonnes grading at 3.13 g/t gold, as at December 31, 2024. Inferred resources were estimated at 15-million tonnes grading 2.7 g/t gold.

Ahafo North hosted total measured and indicated resources of 28.3-million tonnes grading at 1.78 g/t, as at December 31, 2024. Inferred resources were estimated at 13.7-million tonnes grading 1.6 g/t gold.

Type of Mine
Ahafo South is a surface and underground mining operation. Ahafo North is an openpit mining operation.

Mining Method
Openpit mining is conducted using conventional techniques and an owner-operated conventional truck-and-shovel fleet.

A contractor conducts underground mining using conventional stoping methods and conventional mechanised equipment.

Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The available mining fleet for surface mining at Ahafo South comprises three shovels and 36 haul trucks, each with 141 t payload. The available mining fleet for underground mining consists of eight underground loaders and 14 haul trucks, with payload ranging from 55 t to 57 t. The original processing plant was commissioned in 2006. The Ahafo mill expansion, which was completed in October 2019, expanded the plant capacity to process about 11-million tonnes a year. The current processing plant comprises two crushing plants, two grinding circuits, carbon-in-leach circuits, an elution circuit, a counter current decantation circuit, a tailings disposal facility and a reverse osmosis water treatment plant.

Prospects
Newmont achieved commercial production at the Ahafo North project in October 2025, marking the completion of one of West Africa’s most significant new gold developments.
The milestone follows the project’s first gold pour on September 19, 2025, representing the culmination of a multiyear development programme that included the construction of extensive infrastructure, the commissioning of processing facilities and the implementation of workforce training initiatives.
